The Topdeck stroy: from Double Deckers to Modern Coaches
Way back in 1973 a young Australian vet working in the James Herriot country of Northern England saw a paddock full of "retired" London Double Decker buses. Thinking that travelling and sleeping in these old "Red Rattlers' would be a great way to see the world; he bought a bus and then convinced some friends and other free spirited travellers to join him on a trip to Morocco! Soon demand was so strong that 25 of these vehicles were travelling the highways, but mainly the back roads of Europe. In 1975 the adventurous and pioneering management of Topdeck amazed the travel industry by operating an "impossible" overland trip to Kathmandu in a double-decker bus.
And now...
Much has changed at Topdeck since then. Those old Deckers have returned to their paddocks in England to be replaced by a fleet of the latest and most modern European coaches. The pioneering spirit however that has so defined the history of Topdeck is still an essential ingredient on all our programmes and it is why we approach our business still "as group trips for the individual". Topdeck now offers not only extended coach tours around Europe but also ‘make your own’ way packages like Croatia Sailing, trips to great European festivals like Pamplona or Oktoberfest, small group adventures in Egypt and safaris in Africa.
